At HISTORIC CHURCH two of our top priorities are serving and empowering our community. That is why we put a premium on volunteering. Making serving our lifestyle creates a better human experience for us and for those that we serve. Through blatant inclusiveness and compassion that keeps coming back over and over again, we believe that we can help positively shape our city that shapes the world.

If you would like to volunteer, empower and pour out the compassion and gifts that you have to help shape positive change…sign up to volunteer! It’s easy, click here, fill out the connect card and we will get you plugged in. LETS. DO. THIS. #makehistory

] [ UGH BRELAND

lead pastor

In 2017, Hugh and his wife, Holly, spearheaded Historic Church and the Historic movement. As the Lead Pastor & Community Organizer for Historic, Hugh is responsible for vision clarity, strategic innovation, communications, and leadership development. Driven to be community-first, Hugh guides Historic Church to be focused on doing its part in breaking harmful cycles of poverty, violence and inequality while restoring helpful realities of justice, hope and human flourishing.

In conjunction with being a part of the leadership team for Historic, Hugh is also the CEO for Dallas-based non-profit, ACHIEVE, focused on ending exclusion of people with disabilities.

Prior to founding Historic, Breland earned his bachelor’s degree from Baylor University, where he was also recognized as a Baylor Basketball Letterman, then pursued further education at Southwestern Theological Seminary. He has served as an ordained minister for over 20 years, been an educator in Title 1 secondary schools, served in various church staff roles including Students, Creative Arts and Communications. He serves on the Board of Directors for Space_&_Equity, mentors at Cornerstone Crossroads Academy, co-hosts The Chocolate and Vanilla Podcast and has been featured on various platforms for his meaningful work for the marginalized and excluded within our society.

Outside of work, Hugh enjoys adventures with his wife Holly, chasing their toddler Halle-James, and wrestling their 180-pound English Mastiff, Halston.

] [ OLLY BRELAND

creative director

Holly brings a wealth of experience to the Historic Team.  Early in her career she worked for Nordstrom, Inc., where she served on the Marketing team, coordinating events & designing experiences surrounding new store openings in TX, GA, and FL.  Following her time at Nordstrom, she transitioned to the leasing side of commercial real estate in the retail space.  Her creative approach and unique merchandising strategies were differentiating in her roles at The Howard Hughes Corporation and General Growth Properties. Holly specialized in project leasing. She worked with a wide variety of niche specialty retailers and national credit retailers.  Connect the dots from her past experience in marketing, party planning and immersive experiences with real estate development & redevelopment and now, she leverages those skills for HISTORIC. Specifically in creating popup experiences, developing community partnerships & artist collaborations and producing engaging experiences for online audiences. A Baylor University graduate, Holly is married to Hugh. Together they enjoy the daily adventure of raising (& corralling:) their toddler, Halle•James, and their English Mastiff, Halston. Holly is a fan of fashion, coffee enthusiast and an infectious gatherer of people.

ALE BONILLA

broadcast director

Ale met Pastor Hugh Breland in 2001 while cutting his hair; the two became life friends. Since then he has opened several salons across DFW, traveled the

world doing celebrity hair, New York Fashion Week, on stage as an national educator for major hair shows, has published hair and photo work, finalist in several hair competitions, most recently producing and directing projects aimed for networks. He has been with Historic Church since inception from behind the scenes, brainstorming, volunteer work, and creating content for the world to learn to love like Jesus over and over again. He is humbled  to be a part of something much bigger & is grateful he has the opportunity to learn from people that do not always do life like him. Ale is a sponge for love and knowledge as he likes to grow himself in all ways.

AELICIA "CHOCOLATE" WATSON

teaching team member

Aelicia Watson, affectionately known as “Chocolate,” is an Urban Missionary to the women of Dallas’ Bonton neighborhood and across the Metroplex. Chocolate has always had a servant’s heart and a strong desire to serve the lost, the least, and the lonely.

Chocolate began part-time ministry as a volunteer in Bonton several years before answering God’s call into full-time service in 2016. Then, God called her one giant step further to establish Redeemed Women in 2017, a ministry focused on the unique needs and challenges of women facing generational poverty, homelessness, hunger, exploitation, sexual and domestic abuse, teen pregnancy, educational deficiencies, spiritual, emotional, and medical needs, unemployment, transportation needs and the lack of a viable support system.

NATTY AMANUEL

singer, songwriter, guitarist

Nethania Amanuel - known as “Natty” 🐻🎸  is from Fort Worth, Texas! Natty uses his many musical talents to serve on the team as one of the main resident musicians for Historic. Whenever he is not with Historic, you can catch him doing some fun guitar things for Nightstand Lamps or behind the computer producing music.

art director

Jennifer Wester is a Dallas-based artist with a degree in the intersection of Computer Science and Fine Art from Yale University (2016) and a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art from Southern Methodist University. She has exhibited in North America, Europe and Asia in various mediums both digital and physical, including metal sculpture, photography, print work, painting, performance, and audio-visual projection.

Prior to pursuing fine art, Wester was a figure skater for TeamUSA, competing and performing around the world as an Olympic-level ice dancer. She retired from competition in 2010; from professional skating in 2015. Wester readily cites her over two decades of life on the ice as the greatest influences to her arts practice.
